The Cream City Review is a non-profit literary magazine devoted to publishing memorable and energetic fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction by new and established writers. The magazine also features reviews of contemporary literature and criticism, as well as author interviews and artwork. The publication is an established biannual that attracts both readers and submissions from around the world. We receive approximately 4,000 submissions each year in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction from both unpublished and established writers. Our journal reflects this mix—often publishing poet laureates beside artists who have never been published before. From the thousands of submissions, The Cream City Review volunteer staff of graduate students selects 25-35 poems, 5-8 stories, 1-3 essays, 1-3 book reviews, and the work of two or three visual artists for publication in each issue.

cream city review was started in 1975 after Mary Zane Allen, who had been at The Wisconsin Review, decided there should be a similar literary journal operating out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Allen worked with the student union to establish both the magazine and a reading series. Later, the magazine began operating with the support of UWM’s English Department. Over the years cream city review has evolved from an 8″ X 11″ 50 page, Xeroxed zine to the 150-200 page book format that it is today. Although the standards of the magazine have remained high, the appearances have changed dramatically. The shift to glossy, multicolored covers began in the fall of 1989, shortly after Laurie Buman became our art editor. These covers, which become more exciting with every issue, have now become one of our trademarks.

At a time when many literary magazines have been forced to fold for lack of funds, The Cream City Review has survived. This is thanks in large part to grants from The Bradley Foundation and The Wisconsin Arts Board, support from the UWM (specifically, the English Department), Letters and Science Constituent Alumni Association, a succession of dedicated volunteers and, of course, a loyal following of readers and subscribers.
